Organizing the Linen Closet

I opened a huge can of worms when I took down my Christmas decorations. Oh, who am I foolin', I haven't finished taking them down. The delay is due to deciding that this is the year that I would not shove everything back in the closets as they were, but instead tackle the clutter and reorganize EV.ER.Y thing. The coat closet, the bedroom closets, and the linen closet. The latter is going to be the easiest to tackle as I keep in mind a couple of 'rules of thumb' for linens. And as usual, there's a story behind it...

towels and linens, housekeeping tips, home organization, linen closet

It was 5:30 in the morning, and I had just laid back down after a restroom break, trying to fall back to sleep. But I was distracted by an onion-y smell. Then I realized, "that's my sheets!" :( I started trying to think back and remember the last time I washed our sheets. I didn't think it had been all that long ago, but I guess considering the fits of night sweats I'd had that week, it should have come as no surprise that my sheets smelled like onion.

Am I grossin' y'all out? Sorry, I don't mean to. So, then I started to wonder if you all know how many sheet sets the infamous "they" recommend you have on hand. I'll give you a hint: How many licks does it take to get to the center of a lollipop? oooonnne, twooooo, threeeee licks. :)

That's one for the bed, another for the linen closet, and one more in the laundry.

One for the money, two for the show, three to get ready. now, go, go, go! :) Back to business...this rule of thumb also applies to towels. Each person in your household should have three towel sets. That's a lot of towels, but they are the easiest to fold and put away, at least in my house.

I actually have 'not enough sheet sets' and 'too many towels.' How many sheet sets and towels do you have? Had you heard that rule of thumb before? I'm off to wash my sheets. See you in class, Mrs. Hines

  1. We just moved into our new place and only have one towel per person and each family member has 2 sheet sets. So one can be in the wash and one can be on the bed. Less clutter makes me happy:)

    1. Less clutter makes me happy too, Laurie. And I think 2 sheet sets is actually the perfect number. I've seen both 2 and 3 recommended. I guess it depends on who you talk to. Congratulations on your new home!

  2. Three is way too many towels....I think. We have 9 towels for 4 people. It works for us.
On sheets I have two sets for each bed. When one comes off it goes in the wash and the other is put on the bed. Less is more :)
Looking forward to more of your tips.

    1. Tasha, I have to admit that I don't like having that many towels to keep up with. We go through them like crazy...especially my teenager.

  3. Sharon, We have two sheet sets each...one for the bed and one for wash day. I just bought a wonderfully soft and luxurious sheet set with a gift card from Christmas. I am in love! After sleeping with the new sheets I couldn't bring myself to use the old wash day sheets again and recycled them. They'd pilled up and just weren't cozy anymore. Now I'm back to two again! I think the towels are spot on. We could make do with two each but if ever we have house guests...we need those extra towels and more! My towel and sheet tip that I've followed for years is from Martha Stewart...buy only white linens. You can mix the sets and no one is the wiser, and you can bleach them whenever they get a bit dingy. Love that!

Looking forward to next weeks tips!

    1. I think soft and luxurious sheets are worth the investment. They really make a difference in how you well you sleep. I like the Martha Stewart tip. I'd love to have all white towels at least. My daughter's sheets are white, but ours are taupe.

  4. I admit I have so many sheet sets i can't count and a bit of a fetish for doona coverings. I'm actually going to donate the ones I no longer use - Towels, when thy're all washed are plenty but the kids go through them at an insane speed.

    1. that's seems to be the tricky part...keeping those towels all washed. We're always out of towels but we have more than enough.

  5. This is where we struggle. I am like you...enough towels, not enough sheets! Thanks for the great tips!

    1. Hi Heather. If it involves laundry, it's a struggle for me. That and dishes...they multiply while the linens disappear. (they're just buried in the hamper, but still.) ;)
