DIY Cake Plates and Pedestals by Thrift My House

We are so happy to welcome Sherry of Thrift My House to the Cafe today.  

Like so many of us, she is decorating her home on a budget and doing a wonderful job of it!  She's got such a fun DIY project to share with us today.

 Meet Sherry....

Hi, I would like to thank the Academy...oops, the Cafe, for having me here today to share my thrifty project!

I love how my fellow bloggers use pretty cake plates and pedestals in their vignettes and home decor. I've seen some really nice ones when I'm out shopping but I don't want to spend 25+ dollars for just one. Yep, I'm cheap like that. So....I've been collecting plates, candle holders and glass cloches for a while now.  I know you can purchase glass candle holders at  Dollar Tree but instead of spending a dollar why not spend only $.29 or $.49 for one at the thrift store? 

I found most of this stuff at Salvation Army. They tend to be cheaper than GW. Everything you see here was less than $25.00 total. 

After I collected several items, I played around with them and made myself some pretty little cake plates and some interesting pedestals with glass top covers. Mixing and matching was a lot of fun. There are so many options when you do it this way.

This is my first experience gluing glass. This glue was easy to use and dried very fast. I put a small bead around the rim of the candle holder and attached the plate. Not difficult at all.

 I smeared some of the glue around the plate trying to get it center but thankfully it dried clear.

This was not even 5 minutes later. I'm impressed!

The package said to smear Vaseline in the lid so it wouldn't get stuck on the tube. Good to know.

This is my small white pedestal all finished. Perfect size for a fancy cupcake.

 I wanted to keep this pedestal simple too.
This would be so sweet tucked into a pretty vignette. 

Just the right size for a sweet treat.

 This one was a lot of fun to make. I painted the candle holder base and knob a teal blue. 

A dot of glue holds the knob in place.

A pretty place to house something. Just turn the top upside down, fill it up, attach the bottom and turn right side up. I like this because it's different looking.

This glass top is a container that I've been using as a candle holder. I had seashells tucked around a candle which was pretty but I wondered what it would look like as a glass cloche. I painted the plate white and the knob black. Black and white are my new favorite colors right now. 

Put it all together and you have an elegant looking pedestal.

Milk glass is so pretty. I'm always amazed when I come across these dishes at thrift stores.
Again, I painted the base and the knob black.

 I call this my tuxedo pedestal. It just looks all dressed up to me.

 I have to say that these are my two favorite pedestals. I found the cheese plate glass covers, the ruffled plates and the ceramic candle holders all at Salvation Army for $6.00 total. 

 Put them together and you get this.

My twin pedestals.  The colors of the white ceramics blend so well that nothing else needed to be done. Just glue the candle holder base to the plate, pop on the lid, instant pretty!

So there you have it. I hope I have inspired you to make some pedestals of your own. 

Everything looks better on a pedestal. Now let me see if I can find me one to sit on! HaHa!

Stunning Christmas Tree by The Thrifty Rebel

Have you seen anything like this glittering, jewel topped Christmas tree before?  I sure haven't!  It is a sparkly show stopper, isn't it?  It would make a great centerpiece for a Christmas party or command attention on a Christmas mantel.  

Tuula put this together with "just a few" inexpensive items, some paint, glue and glitter.  Even the tree topper is a thrifty treasure!

Ornaments

These paper tree ornaments can be found at Alderberry Hill.    Sarah shows you how easy it is to make these out of double-sided scrapbook paper and a few well placed embellishments.
(I've got plenty of both hanging around here already!)

These are perfect for adding some color and sparkle to the Christmas tree this year.

Speaking of having supplies you need...who doesn't have some spare toilet paper rolls?

Natalie @ NorthShore Days created these sparkly flowers out of them!  And if it seems a little funny to decorate your Christmas tree with...mm hmm...flowers ~ Christmas is in the summertime in New Zealand.  Ever thought about having a BBQ for Christmas dinner???

 Aren't these Silhouette Christmas Tree Ornaments darling?   This project was so simple and turned out so beautiful.  I probably would have been sitting with my scissors cutting out silhouettes for hours!!!  It's a good thing Andrea shows us how to make these the easy way.  Go visit Andrea @ Willow Wisp Cottage to see how it's done.

Decor

Danni @ Silo Hill Farm has created this beautiful Framed Christmas Art.  This would look great in a Christmas vignette on a mantle, a shelf, or a counter top.  It's so nice to add little touches of Christmas all over the house!

Mary of Sweet Little Bluebird crafted up some elegant Christmas frames last season.  (And she doesn't think she's crafty!)  It's amazing how Pinterest can inspire us.

And while we're talking about frames for Christmas decorations, you should definitely check out this mini frame wreath from KariAnne of Thistlewood.  KariAnne always has such compelling stories she shares with her projects...it's such a treat to visit Thistlewood Farm and get inspired by her! 

I saw a ton of frames similar to these at the Dollar Tree recently too.  I wish I would have known then what pretty wreaths they would make!!!  I would have bought a whole bunch.  What a wonderful gift this would be for grandparents too.  Stunning.

What about offering your guests a treat when they visit? Like this hot chocolate station found at Pondered Primed Perfected last Christmas.   Using a tray made from a cabinet door, a few Christmas accessories, and all the makings for hot chocolate we had a warm way to welcome guests for the season.
