HOW TO WRITE A GUEST POST...AND SEND IT!

Have you ever wanted to write a guest post, but really had no idea how it all works?  Are you intimidated by the process?  Do  the words HTML send shivers down your spine?
If you are looking to grow your blog, guest posting is one of the greatest and easiest ways to get exposure and maybe even pick up some new followers.  Guess what?  If you are already writing a blog, 90% of the guest posting process is already taken care of.  Now let's see if I can eliminate your fears regarding the other 10%.

Probably one of the most important things about guest posting is making sure you know what the person you are going to post for wants.
  • Do they want a fresh new post that has never been published before?  Or perhaps an older post is acceptable.
  1.  Either way, you want to make sure you bring your A-game to the table.  If they want a fresh, unpublished post, make sure you have time to do a nice job before you accept.
  2. If an older post is O.K., you'll want to go back in and freshen it up a little.  (I am appalled at some of my first posts, but they can easily be spiffed up if needed, now that I am a little bit more experienced.)
  • Do they have a specific deadline for receiving the post?
  1. Anyone who is asking for a guest post, will be able to tell you what date they need it by.  Again, you want to make sure you have time to do a nice job.
  • Do they have a specific topic in mind?
  1. If their blog is entirely about cooking and recipes, then you want to make sure you write a post accordingly.  Many blogs are a good mix of everything, including DIY, Crafting, Home Decor, Cooking, Book Review, etc.  Take a minute before you respond and look around at their blog.  Make sure it's the kind of blog you want to do a guest post for.
  • Will they be introducing you to their readers?
  1. Either they're going to do it or you're going to do.  One way or the other, you need an introduction.  The basics of that are, that you are respectfully (happy, glad, thrilled, honored, etc.) to be guest posting at their blog today. Now, here is a HUGE opportunity to promote yourself to a whole slew of new readers.  You want them to know who you are, where you blog and what your blog is about.  A picture of yourself or your blog button is perfectly acceptable in your introduction.
At this point, you are ready to write your post.  If you are nervous about it, you can fall back on the old "Public Speaking Rule" of tell them what you're going to talk about, then talk about it, then tell them what you've told them (wrap it up).  So easy.
Once you have written your post, please, please, please, proof read it and spell check it.  Then save it as a draft.

Now you are ready to email the HTML to the person you are guest posting for.  Do not be intimidated by this.  It's a piece of cake.  Go to the post and click edit post. See in the upper left hand corner of your post screen (on blogger) where it says "Compose"?  See the other button next to it that says HTML? Click on that.  It will look like a bunch of gobbledy-gook.  That's the HTML code. It even includes the code for the pictures, although you can't see them.
Copy it and paste it into the body of an email to send to the person you are posting for.  In the subject line of the email, just put, "Guest post from.....", whatever your blog is called.
That's it, you have done it!!   It wasn't that hard!!

If you are skeptical, like I was the first time I did it, you can "test" it before you email it.  Just copy and paste the HTML into a new post on your own blog. (Be sure you paste it in the "HTML" part and not the "Compose" part. Then click on compose and Voila!  You should be able to see what the person you emailed it to will see. Just don't publish it!

Now just a few last words on guest posting etiquette
  • It is proper to thank your host at the beginning and the end of your post.
  • It is perfectly OK to invite their readers to stop by your blog sometime and be sure to put a link to your blog so they know how to find you.
  • It is proper etiquette to post a teaser(a picture of your project or recipe) and a link to the hosts blog, on your own blog saying that you are guest posting over at "XXX" today, on the day that your guest post is to appear on the hosts blog.  It's nice, because she is sharing her readers with you that day and you are returning the favor by sending your readers to her blog.  Does that make sense?
  • You may want to verify the time zone difference and adjust your teaser post that day accordingly.  If you post at 7 a.m. on the east coast and are sending your readers to a  west coast blog, guess what?  Your post may not be up on their page yet, when your readers go there and your readers may not check back later.
  • Most hosts/hostesses, would prefer that you not post the guest post on your own blog until a week has passed.  When you do re-post it on your own blog, be sure to take the introduction of yourself out (if you wrote one) before you post.
That's really all there is to guest posting.  I promise if you do it once or twice, you will never be afraid of it again.  (You may be a little nervous, but not afraid!)  So get out there and give it a try!  The beauty of guest posting is, that you may want some guest posters for your own blog some day and most good hosts will be happy to return the favor!

If you're ready to give this a try, Inspiration Cafe  is thrilled to be your "first guest post" blog.  We'll be more than happy to give you a hand if you have any questions or if there is something here you didn't quite understand.  Just let us know!
Have a lovely day!

Organizing the Linen Closet

I opened a huge can of worms when I took down my Christmas decorations. Oh, who am I foolin', I haven't finished taking them down. The delay is due to deciding that this is the year that I would not shove everything back in the closets as they were, but instead tackle the clutter and reorganize EV.ER.Y thing. The coat closet, the bedroom closets, and the linen closet. The latter is going to be the easiest to tackle as I keep in mind a couple of 'rules of thumb' for linens. And as usual, there's a story behind it...

towels and linens, housekeeping tips, home organization, linen closet

It was 5:30 in the morning, and I had just laid back down after a restroom break, trying to fall back to sleep. But I was distracted by an onion-y smell. Then I realized, "that's my sheets!" :( I started trying to think back and remember the last time I washed our sheets. I didn't think it had been all that long ago, but I guess considering the fits of night sweats I'd had that week, it should have come as no surprise that my sheets smelled like onion.

laundry care, home organization, bed linens, linen closet, sheet sets

Am I grossin' y'all out? Sorry, I don't mean to. So, then I started to wonder if you all know how many sheet sets the infamous "they" recommend you have on hand. I'll give you a hint: How many licks does it take to get to the center of a lollipop? oooonnne, twooooo, threeeee licks. :)

That's one for the bed, another for the linen closet, and one more in the laundry.
linens, home organization, housekeeping tips, linen closet, towel sets

One for the money, two for the show, three to get ready. now, go, go, go! :) Back to business...this rule of thumb also applies to towels. Each person in your household should have three towel sets. That's a lot of towels, but they are the easiest to fold and put away, at least in my house.

housekeeping tips, towels and linens, linen closet, organization

I actually have 'not enough sheet sets' and 'too many towels.' How many sheet sets and towels do you have? Had you heard that rule of thumb before? I'm off to wash my sheets. See you in class, Mrs. Hines

Thanks for the great tips Sharon!

Simple Wire Wrapped Pendant

 Hey Everyone,

Another necklace I hear you ask? I know, I know, I'm more of a bracelet person myself, but for some reason I'm rocking the necklaces lately.
And this one is just so easy, its a great beginner's project and can be whipped up super quick as an accessory to match your new outfit or
as a last minute gift for a special occasion.

What you need for 1 pendant:

A bead (tear drop is preferable but not necessary), 1 headpin, a length of 20 gauge jewelry wire, a jump ring, pliers and a chain

How to:

1. Thread the bead onto the headpin.
2. Bend the headpin at a 90 degree angle
3. Using round nosed jewelry pliers bend the headpin back around to form a loop. (note - you don't need round nose pliers, if all you have are the standard pliers - those work just fine too)
4. Cut off excess wire

5. Attach the jewelry wire onto the loop and secure (ignore the jump ring in this pic)

6 - 8. Wrap... it does not need to be neat - in fact its supposed to be random and fun. Tuck in the end of the wire and add the jump ring

9. Cute pendant! Now add the chain!

I loved this one so much I made a whole bunch of them!!!

I attached 3 to a larger jump ring to make a small cluster pendant of sorts.

These little pendants are simple and striking enough to be worn on their own.

I love this turquoise one - love it!!!

Once you start making these, you wont be able to stop.
Be warned - they are addictive!

If you have more beads of the same colour, this technique would look stunning if you were to make earrings!

I really hope I've inspired you all today....

Take care and have a great week, don't forget to follow us on Facebook,

Jutta (Organized Living Solutions) Knitted Lamp

Hi guys, it is Jutta here from Creative Chaos.

Despite it being the height of summer in the Southern Hemisphere, I always feel like cosy-ing up around Christmas. I light candles, I bake, and I knit...

I used to think that this comes from growing up in Germany, but apparently more people feel that way here. In the latest issue of the South African 'Ideas' magazine I found a pattern for a knitted lamp.

It looks like a tulip and I love it!

You will need:

4 knitting needles (4.5 mm)
50 g grey wool
1 LED light bulb
1 lamp holder
3 m light duty electrical cable
1 electric plug

Cast on 9 stitches on 3 needles (3 stitches per needle). Knit stocking stitch in rounds until your tube is about
180 cm (5.9 feet) long.

Knit the end as follows:

1. row: knit one, increase one, knit one, until the end of the row
2. row: knit
3. row: knit one, increase one, increase one, knit one until the end
4. row: knit
5. row: knit one, increase one, knit two, increase one, knit one until the end
6. row: knit
7. row: knit one, purl one,

Continue doing that for about 8.5 cm (3.34 inches), depending on the size of your bulb.
Then cast off.

Darn yard ends, connect the plug to your cable, pull tube over cable, then connect your lamp holder and your bulb,
and enjoy!

Happy knitting!

Come and visit Creative Chaos for more DIY ideas, general rambling and the constant attempt to beautify life :-).

Lots of love,

A cleaning tip from Mrs. Hines Class

profilepic

Hello! My name is Sharon and I blog at mrshinesclass.com, a virtual classroom where we learn how to cook, clean and decorate our way to a better home. Lately, I've been on a mission to cut down on the amount of household cleaners I use, and to use all natural products when possible. So, I'm so excited to be sharing an all natural cleaner that I recently discovered with you today.

cleaning with vinegar, all natural cleaners, garbage disposal deodorizer

I don't know about you, but I have been itchin' to give my house a good cleaning after Christmas. I'm only just now taking down my Christmas decorations, so hopefully the house will be back in order before the weekend is over.

Now, the reason I'm just now taking down the Christmas decorations is that I was sick all through Christmas. I'm so happy to be feeling like myself again! But, while I was ill, I spent lots of time on the couch. And for some odd reason, my sense of smell was much more keen than usual. I'm not pregnant ;) Let's just say that the throw pillows needed a little freshening. So, as soon as I felt up to it, I stripped the pillows of their covers, grabbed every blanket in sight and tossed them in the wash. That incident got me thinking...it doesn't matter how clean your house is if it doesn't smell clean. The biggest "trouble spot" in my home is the kitchen. Between the trash can, cat food, and garbage disposal, I sometimes feel like I'm fighting a losing battle.

So, I couldn't wait to test the all natural garbage disposal cleaner that I found on Pinterest. I got out my ice trays, filled them with cut up lemons and vinegar and popped them back in the freezer, according the directions. But, I sort of forgot about them. So, for a few days, every time I'd open the refrigerator, this smell would overtake me. And every time I would walk past a particular spot in the kitchen, there was that smell. It was kind of like walking on certain board that creaks every time you step on it. For the Modern Family fans, "Gotta fix that step." Phil Dunphy. Sorry, I digress. Back to my story...I'd step in and out of the smelly zone, trying to figure out, "what could it be?" I didn't need another odor fiasco in the kitchen.

I brought it up with my husband and he reminded me, "It's the ice trays in the freezer." "Oh, I never popped the ice cubes out and placed them in a baggie!" So, I immediately did and the vinegar smell faded. For a while I when I opened the freezer or fridge, I could still smell it, though not quite as strong, . But after a few weeks, the odor was gone. I do love having the ice cubes on hand to toss into the disposal for a little freshening. I just recommend following the directions all the way through and putting the frozen vinegar in a baggie as soon as possible. So, after being "pin-tested", I give this all natural garbage disposal deodorizer an 'A.'

INSPIRATION CAFE WELCOMES A NEW MEMBER!

We are so pleased to add Mel, from Mellywood's Mansion as a new member/permanent contributor to our group at the Inspiration Cafe.   She has done a few guest posts for us here, but if you haven't met her........

Haven't we all had at least one project that made us want to put a drill to our head?  Her blog is Mellywood's Mansion a Diary of DIY Delights and Disasters
and she is a delight to read!  Here's a clip from her blog that still makes us laugh!.......

"DIY - an acronym scaring and scarring families everywhere. Hi I'm Mel and I am on a mission to renovate and decorate with little experience but a whole bag full of motivation. Read on to be amazed or horrified with what I come up with."

Just so you can get to know Mel a little better, here are a few of her favorite posts.....

This is kind of the beginning of her mission and it's sure been fun to follow along!

Mel has been working on her laundry room and it's so cute!

She refers to the above project as a "butter offering" and if you don't know what that means.......here is Mel's explanation in her own words, "Well today's project is what I like to refer to as a butter offering, or spelled correctly but-ahh.

If you don't know what it means, it's when you see something from far away and you go, oh that looks great then you get up close and you screw your face up and think, "but-ahh" no, no it's not."

Now, we love everyone of Mels posts, but here are a few of our top faves...so far.....

How you start with a title like that and end with a picture like the one above....well, that 's just the beauty of Mel's awesome sense of humor!

You all know how we love a quick, easy and inexpensive project, and this was one of those.  Trash Chic?  We think Mel has coined a phrase!

A few you've probably seen featured....like everywhere.....

Jaw Dropping Drawers

Bottle Cap Advent Calendar
We hope you enjoy Mel as much as we do and we think she fits right in with our group here.  We are delighted to have her and you'll be seeing a lot more of her here in the future!
Thanks for joining us Mel!
